What is IfThen?

IfThen is a fundraising platform for designated 501(c)(3) nonprofits.

We designed IfThen to help nonprofits engage younger donors through action-based giving. IfThen fundraising campaigns run for 12 months, during which time nonprofits are expected to deliver 12 months of action in exchange for 12 months of donor support. IfThen values action, accountability, responsibility and communication

What is a pledge collection goal?

The pledge collection goal set by a nonprofit is the number of average pledges needed to best support their campaign’s goals. Ongoing work costs money—supplies, transportation, staff pay, etc.—so a goal is set to ensure that the nonprofit can deliver its promised action to the fullest extent (and hopefully beyond that).

But don’t worry: If the pledge collection goal is not met, the 12 months of action will still begin. It’s important to help a nonprofit get as close as possible to reaching (or exceeding!) their goal, but at the end of the day, it’s an aspirational goal.

What is the difference between the nonprofit’s pledge collection goal and a captain’s personal collection goals?

Captains work to ensure that the nonprofit has the pledges it needs to run a successful campaign. They set smaller, individual goals for themselves to help the nonprofit collect its overall pledge collection goal.

Captain goals feed into the main campaign goal. If you pledge from a captain’s page, your pledge will still go toward the nonprofit’s overall pledge collection goal.

How are captains picked? Can I be a captain?

A nonprofit selects a handful of captains ahead of launching to ensure that they have a team onboard to

help them meet their pledge collection goal.

If you would like be a captain for a nonprofit, reach out to the nonprofit directly and let them know that you’re interested. They will help you get started.

Who can create an IfThen campaign?

IfThen campaigns are open only to nonprofits registered as a 501(c)(3) organization.

After a nonprofit has requested an invite to IfThen, an IfThen team member works with the nonprofit for the onboarding process. Our proprietary onboarding and campaign creation process is thoughtfully designed to set a nonprofit up for fundraising success, and ensures that they are empowered to create a compelling and successful IfThen campaign.

Unfortunately, supporters and non-employees are not able to run fundraising campaigns on behalf of an organization at this time. If you’re interested in helping a nonprofit launch an IfThen campaign, please refer them to IfThen.org to request an invitation to fundraise. You can act as a captain for their first IfThen campaign to ensure its success!

I work for a 501(c)(3) organization. How can I launch an IfThen campaign?

Currently, participation in the IfThen platform is by invitation only. Please request an invite [NOTE: link to “Request an Invite” popup] to join. As soon as we’re able to take on a new nonprofit partner, the IfThen team will walk you through the onboarding process, and you’ll be on your way to launching your first IfThen campaign!

How will my money be used if I pledge to a campaign?

Your pledge, when charged for a month of successful action, will be used by the nonprofit to support their ongoing action.

While it’s easy to think only of the physical supplies often needed to perform an action, the full effort is usually much more complex, and often includes transportation, educational initiatives, paying staff, and more. Your pledge supports the nonprofit’s overall costs necessary to successfully deliver their action complete their goal.

Who is responsible for determining an action has been delivered in a given month?

IfThen vets incoming nonprofits to ensure they are a reputable organization that has successfully maintained their 501(c)(3) status for two years or longer.

Because we can promise that only reputable 501(c)(3) organizations use the platform, IfThen trusts its nonprofit partners to be honest in reporting their monthly action. They are responsible for notifying the platform of their action and triggering a monthly donation; IfThen does not keep tabs on their actions.

With many volunteers or employees aware of their actual work, it is unlikely that a nonprofit will be able to make false reports. Doing so would be done at the risk of losing pledgers’ confidence and support, and ultimately, their return for future support, which is paramount for a nonprofit’s ability to stay open!

We trust that need for happy, returning supporters is a powerful influence in maintaining honesty and integrity in monthly reporting and donation process. However, if you feel that a nonprofit is inaccurately reporting their monthly action, please contact IfThen at info@ifthen.org.

How can I trust a nonprofit fundraising with IfThen is legitimate?

IfThen only allows nonprofits that have maintained their 501(c)(3) designation for two or more years, ensuring that they have a record of ethical practices and successful outcomes.

What does 501(c)(3) status mean?

501(c)(3) designation is given to specific types of nonprofit organizations: public charities, private foundations or private operating foundations. It is regulated and administered by the US Department of Treasury.

501(c)(3) designation entails that your donations toward this organization is tax deductible.

To maintain this designation for more than one year, a nonprofit must properly use funds to deliver on its designated purpose. For example, if an organization’s 501(c)(3) designation is based on the purpose of feeding homeless individuals, its activity and income must be focused on that purpose. Doing otherwise—be it engaging in actions outside of its designated purpose or paying exorbitant salaries while failing to act on feeding the homeless—would result in the likely loss of its 501(c)(3) designation.

Nonprofits fundraising with IfThen have maintained their 501(c)(3) designation for two or more years, ensuring that they have a record of ethical practices and successful outcomes.

Are my donations to a nonprofit through IfThen tax deductible?

Yes! All nonprofits fundraising on the IfThen platform are designated 501(c)(3) organizations, which ensures that all your donations are tax deductible.

What happens when a campaign ends?

When one campaign ends, a nonprofit is most likely to launch a follow-up IfThen campaign. If you initially joined as a pledger, consider becoming a captain and help a nonprofit start a new campaign!

The nonprofit will likely reach out to you to support their follow-up campaign, or perhaps join in other support initiatives.

When a campaign ends, you will still be able to access all receipts from that campaign in your personal IfThen dashboard at any time.

Will IfThen refund donations?

Donations pass through IfThen to go directly to the nonprofit you have pledged to. Donations made through

IfThen are final and non-refundable.

I’m interested in partnering with IfThen.

IfThen occasionally partners with select organizations aligned with our focus on nonprofit support and social impact. Please keep in mind that we are a small team and are unable to take on certain partnerships. If you think your organization may be a good fit, please drop us a line [link to info@ifthen.org].

Where can I search all live IfThen campaigns?

At the moment, we leave it up to the individual nonprofit to share and recruit support to their IfThen campaign. Live campaigns are not yet searchable on the IfThen site. Stay tuned!

What is the cost of IfThen fundraising?

IfThen is a fundraising platform designed specifically for donor acquisition efforts; as part of all fundraising campaigns, we provide nonprofits with a set of tools focused on donor acquisition efforts, communication services and strategy to assist in donor retention efforts.

New donor acquisition is incredibly important for the success of a nonprofit. As such, they typically spend a lot of money seeking out new supporters for their cause. We designed IfThen fundraising to make donor acquisition simple, engaging, and most importantly, inexpensive. The typical cost of traditional donor acquisition is about $1.25 per dollar raised. IfThen charges only $0.10 per $1.00 raised, reducing the traditionally high cost of acquisition by 92 percent.
